Chapter Seven

Brandon McGraw had one of those voices that could soothe even the most dedicated insomniac to sleep. Try as she might, Ginny was having a heck of a time keeping up with the gist here. What the devil was he droning on about now? It seemed he had one of those careers that even when you knew what he did for a living, you still didn’t know. Her head throbbed from the strain.

Behind her she could hear Colt and Carolina yukking it up about something or other. Suddenly she wished she were riding back there. Sounded as if they were having fun.

Ginny dragged a palm over her upper lip. Man it was hot out here. Her wilted clothes were covered with dust, and she could feel the grit in her teeth. All around her, grasshoppers sprang out of the grass, irritated by the swirling dirt the horses kicked up in passing. The horses shook their heads and blew noisily through their nostrils.

Ahead, the road loomed endlessly.

Above, the sun beat mercilessly.

Beside her, Brandon droned incessantly.

Whose brainy idea had this been, anyway?

She licked her lips and redoubled her effort to concentrate on Brandon’s nattering. Wasn’t it something about U.S. tax provisions and restrictive land access policies? Gracious. She was a Ph.D. Surely she could follow his lines of reasoning. If only she weren’t so interested in what was going on behind her.

“—our nation’s domestic production capacity and infrastructure are stretched to the limit. A comprehensive national energy policy that encourages international investment—”

“Mmm, hmm.” What were Colt and Carolina finding so fascinating back there? It was driving her nuts, not knowing.

“—and world energy demand will be more than sixty percent higher and it is expected that three-quarters of that energy demand growth index—”

Ginny nodded, not registering a word. “Uh-huh.”

Unable to resist temptation, she stole another quick peek over her shoulder. Colt really did look good with Carolina. Her test results were…

Were they holding hands?

Bathed in a sudden cold sweat, Ginny grabbed the pommel of her saddle and hung on for dear life. She felt dizzy. Faint.

Could it be the beginning signs of sunstroke? she wondered.

It was horribly hot out here.

Certainly she was not this disoriented and confused because her sister was simply holding hands with her best buddy. No. After all, she’d been the one to encourage their romance.

Must be the heat. She reached for her water bottle and took a long, chilling drink. They sure were having a good time back there.

Ginny swabbed her face with her neckerchief and batted at a bug that plagued her.

“—international tax rules are quite complex and expose multinational companies to potential—”

A blast of laughter came from behind.

She dabbed at her forehead. Funny, before she’d tested them, she never would have put those two together in a million years. But you couldn’t argue with science. Even so, out of all the people in her family, she’d have thought that Colt would have tested more compatibly with…well, with her. Probably because they got on so well as children.
